28 September 2010

The annual Murray & Roberts Des Baker Award for Architectural Design was held last night at Turbine Hall in Newtown Johannesburg. Warwick Manley, Stephen Steyn and Carla Taljaard from the University of Pretoria were announced as 2010 winners for their project titled: An extraordinary machine.

Pim Artz, Jarryd Murray and Wayne Meyer from Durban University of Technology were first runners-up and Taryn Jankes, Karina Mckinley and Gerardus Slee of the University of Cape Town were second runners-up. Each of the winners received a certificate and cash prize.

Architectural students, academia, Murray & Roberts executives and representatives of professional organisations involved in the congress week were amongst the many guests in attendance at the awards ceremony. The theme of the 2010 National Architecture Student Congress and architecture design competition was; ‘Sport is the opiate of the masses.'

The award, sponsored by Murray & Roberts, is held in recognition of the late Des Baker, former executive chairman of Murray & Roberts. The award, which was introduced in 1983, is open to all architectural students at Universities nationally and is endorsed by the Heads of Schools Committee of the South African Council for the Architectural Profession.

The aim of the Des Baker Student Architecture Design Competition is to;

  • Develop an understanding and build relationships between architects and contractors
  • Recognise and reward students of architecture for their excellence.

The Murray & Roberts Des Baker Student Architecture Design Competition is held in conjunction with the annual week-long National Architecture Student Congress, which is hosted by different learning institutions each year. The 2010 National Architecture Student Congress was hosted by the University of Johannesburg.
